What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR is an amygdala desensitising technique that involves using different variations of light pen movements and hypnotic suggestion to process traumatic memories or stressful events. In consequence, you will no longer be affected by symptoms such as: chronic worry, intrusive memories, sleep disturbance, mood disturbance, impaired cognitive functions (e.g. memory, concentration), hyper alertness or fear, poor self-esteem, as well as avoidance behaviours. Thus, it transforms negative thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and improves mental wellbeing. 

What is an EMDR therapy session like?

We will first establish the problem you would like treated.  I will then ask questions about visual, kinaesthetic and auditory representations of the memory/incident, as well as identify negative core beliefs and the intensity of the distressing memory or event.  Following this I will help you to sit as comfortably and relaxed as possible, and then apply a number of light pen passes; these can be horizontal, infinity passes, wavy line or circular movements.    As I apply these passes I will occasionally make hypnotic suggestions to help you quickly and effectively heal negative thoughts and emotions.  After about 12-15 passes I will stop, clear your mental cache with a basic question, then re-assess your distress levels and continue applying the technique until this has reduced to about 0 or 1.  Following the successful processing of the event, I will then apply a final round of passes to strengthen positive core beliefs and emotions.

Is EMDR therapy like hypnosis?

Applying light pen movements in different directions not only serves the purpose of scrambling a traumatic memory, it can also facilitate an eyes open trance state; this is a desirable state because the therapist can implant hypnotic suggestions to help you quickly and effectively heal, normally in minutes for a single layered trauma.

After each EMDR session I will apply techniques to ensure you are in a relaxed state.

Can I do EMDR on my own?

No.  The technique can only be successfully applied by a therapist.
