Types of treatments applied online:

Depending on your needs and goals, we may utilise a variety of proven treatment approaches. These include Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), EMDR, and Somatic Therapy.

EFT Therapy 

Is a scientifically proven approach that draws on various modalities such as cognitive therapy, behaviour and exposure therapy, counselling, and psychological acupuncture, to transform negative thoughts, emotions and behaviours, and leave you feeling happy and relaxed.

Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy is a set of body-centred techniques that explore physical sensations, emotions and memories experienced within the framework of the body.  The focus of this therapy is to heal emotional distress and restore balance to the body’s energy system, which can become disrupted due to experiencing stressors or traumas.  

To facilitate healing, some of the techniques utilised may include: mindfulness of breathing and relaxation methods; focussing on body sensations and emotions; descriptive language; visualisation; role play; as well as tapping on acupressure points.

The application of these various techniques can safely release distress attached to traumatic thoughts, and enable you to feel free and move forward with your life.

EMDR Therapy: Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing

EMDR is an amygdala desensitising technique that involves using different variations of light pen movements and hypnotic suggestion to process traumatic or stressful thoughts. In consequence, you will no longer be affected by symptoms such as:  chronic perceptions of danger or threat; hyper alertness or fear; intrusive memories, sleep disturbance, mood disturbance, impaired cognitive functions, poor self-esteem, as well as avoidance behaviours. Thus, it transforms negative thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and builds positive mental health.

What is online treatment?

Online anxiety therapy follows the same fundamental principles as face-to-face therapy. It provides a secure alternative to meeting in person. Instead of a weekly face-to-face therapy appointment, the session is conducted in separate locations using a webcam and audio link. 

The confidentiality and security of your therapy remains central to all parts of the process.

You have the option of online therapy via Zoom or Skype video-conferencing software. These are established, secure platforms used by many online therapists.

You may find the process of communicating from your own protected safe space very helpful in itself. Some clients say they actually find it easier to talk about some things when they’re not the in the same room as their therapist. There is also more flexibility online, for example if you have to change location for any reason, you’ll still be able to continue with your sessions, as long as you have access to your device. 

How does online therapy work?

If you want to go ahead with online therapy then:  

  • before the session starts, you will receive an email invitation to join the Zoom or Skype meeting. This will contain a link to click on.
  • you will then be prompted to download the application. Accept the download and simply follow the on-screen instructions to install.
  • when you’ve done this, go back to your email and click on the meeting link I sent you and this will take you to the meeting room, where I will be waiting for you. This is a confidential and secure space.

You will receive an invitation to a new meeting each time. This ensures that the space is never available to any other client.

Is online therapy secure?

There are several things you can and should do to reduce any risk:

  • always use a password to access your computer and change your password frequently
  • keep the security software (virus protection, firewall) on your computer up to date
  • check regularly for software updates for your video and audio communication software
  • plan your session for a time when you know you can have privacy, making sure others in the house know not to disturb or interrupt you
  • find a safe and undisturbed space where you can set up your device and sit comfortably for the whole session
  • close all other open browsers and programmes on your computer as these can affect the connection and either slow it down or cause the screen to freeze
  • Make sure your device is fully charged or have a charging device handy.

It’s important to take confidentiality very seriously. You need to take personal responsibility for your own computer security and ensure that confidentiality is protected. Let me know straight away if you have any concerns that the security and confidentiality of  the  sessions is or has been compromised.

What else do I need to know about online therapy?
