Understanding Trauma: Unveiling its Impact

Trauma is a profound psychological, physiological, and behavioural response to shocking incidents that unfold unexpectedly, leaving an indelible mark of distress and overwhelm. These incidents span a spectrum, from natural disasters and accidents to experiences of abuse, violence, medical procedures, humiliation, rejection, abandonment, and neglect.

Crucially, the trauma response is deeply personal and subjective; each individual’s experience is uniquely their own. It’s vital to recognise that not everyone exposed to the same incident will develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Unlocking the path to recovery and resilience requires person-centered, tailored support that acknowledges the distinctive needs of each person, empowering them on their journey towards healing.

What Are The Symptoms of Trauma?

Acute Trauma Symptoms

Upon experiencing or witnessing a highly threatening or distressing event, it is perfectly normal to develop symptoms of mental, emotional, and physiological stress.  It is also expected symptoms such as confusion, sadness, anxiety, panic, irritability, agitation, anger, and despair might manifest.  These may last two to four weeks, however if you continue to present with these symptoms then it may be an indication that you have post-traumatic stress disorder.

PTSD Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) includes a continuation of acute stress symptoms, however they tend to be significantly more severe and can also include:

  • Reexperiencing the event(s) — during the day whilst awake (flashbacks, or intrusive images or thoughts) or as nightmares when asleep, causing strong emotions and disturbing sensations.
  • Feeling flooded by emotions or sensations or presenting with chronic pain or illness when stressed.
  • Avoidance of places, activities, people and/or thoughts, memories, emotions or sensations that remind you of the difficult event(s).  This may also include denying the event occurred, repressing feelings, or minimising pain.  Chronic busyness, overworking, excessive screen time or sleeping excessively may be an indication of avoidance.
  • Hypervigilance – feeling you must remain on guard for any current threat.
  • Hypo-arousal – feeling helplees, hopeless, despair, depressed
  • Feeling disconnected from your body or the world around you.
  • Feeling emotionally numb.
  • Engaging in risky or self-harming behaviours.
  • Interpersonal difficulties or problems in relationships.
  • Negative self-perception (including feeling diminished, defeated or worthless).

Children with PTSD may exhibit symptoms such as:

  • Dreams of the trauma, which may then change into nightmares of monsters.
  • Re-living the trauma in their play. For example, a child involved in a road traffic accident might re-enact the crash with toy cars.
  • Losing interest in things that they previously enjoyed.
  • Expressing the belief that they will not live long enough to grow up.
  • Stomach aches and headaches.

C-PTSD

Complex post-traumatic stress disorder develops in some people with PTSD that have experienced repeatedly highly threatening or horrific incidents difficult or impossible to escape from. The disorder includes the aforementioned core symptoms of PTSD, including:

  • Severe and pervasive problems in managing and experiencing intense emotions.
  • Persistent beliefs about oneself as diminished, defeated or worthless, accompanied by deep and pervasive feelings of shame, guilt or failure related to the traumatic event.
  • Persistent difficulties in sustaining relationships and in feeling close to others.

Trauma Treatment: How Do You Treat Trauma?

Embarking on trauma treatment is a personalised journey, beginning with the identification of the challenges you face and the establishment of your wellbeing goals. Through this collaborative process, we craft a bespoke treatment approach tailored specifically to your needs. This may encompass you choosing a blend of proven methods designed to transform negative thoughts, emotions, and behaviours while enhancing overall wellbeing.

Techniques such as EMDR Therapy, EFT Therapy, and Somatic Therapy serve not only to heal trauma, but also to elevate general wellbeing—increasing happiness, life satisfaction, fostering a sense of meaning and purpose, encouraging personal growth, autonomy, self-acceptance, and nurturing positive relationships.

In addition to these therapeutic approaches, I provide education on health self-care techniques, and offer expert advice and guidance for implementing lifestyle medicines that promote wellbeing. Studies show the profound impact of building mental wellbeing as a shield against physical and mental health issues, ultimately preventing premature mortality. Recognising the intricate connection between mental and physical health, sessions are dedicated not only to healing trauma but also to cultivating various dimensions of wellbeing and supporting lifestyle changes.

This comprehensive approach aims to prevent chronic distress, illness, and enhance vitality, emphasizing the transformative power of holistic healing.

Trauma Therapist Birmingham: Where Does Trauma Therapy Take Place?

Therapy sessions can take place online or in-person.

I am based in Birmingham, UK, with a clinic in Yardley.  I also carry out home visits for persons who cannot travel to the clinic.

Online therapy locations are via Zoom, or Skype, and can take place wherever you are in the world, at a time that suits you.  They are the same as face to face sessions, except they take place via video call.

For further details about online sessions please visit this page: online therapy.

If you have any further questions about the service, you can contact me via the following page here.

What Is The Process Of Trauma Therapy

The first step is we arrange an initial free consultation so we can explore the challenges you face, including any questions you have about the service regarding price, length of sessions, modalities, as well as to enable you to determine whether I am the right person for helping you address your difficulty.

If you choose to get therapeutic support, then next step involves carrying out an in-depth  psychological wellbeing assessment.  This entails enquiring further about the problem you are experiencing, how long you’ve experienced symptoms, how the difficulty impacts you, prior medicines taken, and identifying your treatment goals.

After this assessment, I will devise  a therapy plan that outlines what we can cover in the session, and the techniques used to address the problem.  If you are happy with the suggested treatment plan, we can then begin therapy sessions.

Dependent on the problem you experience and severity of symptoms, sessions may take place weekly; each session lasts for 75 to 90 minutes.

Sessions can be offered individually, or as packages of 6 or 12 sessions, depending on the difficulty experienced.  Packages can also be created specifically tailored to your individual needs.

What Is The Cost Of Trauma Therapy

For continued support following the initial free consultation, you have the flexibility to choose between paying per session or opting for a session package.

The cost options are as follows:

  • £100 per session
  • 6 Session Package – £540
  • 12 Session Package – £960

Your investment goes beyond the sessions—it’s a commitment to your wellbeing. Choose the option that aligns best with your goals
